Vané - Radovan Ivšić
Shadow theater
Text: Radovan Ivšić (editions Gallimard)
Design and interpretation: Clément Peretjatko
Duration: 15 minutes
Synopsis:
The short play Vané was written for the vocabulary of shadow theatre (1943) and stands in "absolute contrast" with the Ustasha regime then ruling Croatia. One could not imagine a vision more far-off to fascist ideology.
Vané, the eponymous character of this play, is a little boy who naturally obeys his imagination and, as a result, just as naturally disobeys the dream-crushing family order. For Vané understands in his naivety that life - real life - begins by deserting the marked paths and that the simple freedom of being is first conquered with the invisible weapon of the imagination, always capable of bringing forth the marvelous here and now.
Here appears in its most stripped-down form one of the major themes of Radovan Ivšić, convinced that the quest for the marvelous is confused with that of freedom and that neither can have an end. Vané , a short play written in 1943 for a shadow theatre, was performed with actors in Dubrovnik in 1980, but it had never before been performed with shadows.

Reviews:
"(…) From the very beginning, we are plunged into a waking dream with the feeling that suddenly something infinitely tender takes us in its arms and envelops us. We owe this tenderness to Clément who shaped Vané while magnificently interpreting the voices of the text. (…). "

"(...) The characters in this show, drawn with wire, reflect the simplicity of this piece. "
